San Diego Southwestern College + Naval Sea Systems Command Apprenticeship Program - April 17th

Southwestern College is proud to announce the commencement of the Southwest Regional Apprenticeship Program at Naval Air Station North Island, in partnership with Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility. PSNS & IMF, a Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) field activity, encourages individuals interested in career opportunities to join the Navy's civilian workforce through educational partnerships.

The Southwest Regional Apprenticeship Program follows a co-operative education apprenticeship model, featuring Southwestern College as the academic educational provider. Military commands in, and near, San Diego have collaborated to bring their apprentices together to a common facility for formal instruction centering on naval maintenance and repair trades. Students earn pay while attending classes and all tuition and fees are paid. Regular pay increases occur at periodic intervals as students progress through the program.

The program features both academics and trades training as part of a four-year, college-accredited, Department of Labor (DoL)-certified apprenticeship. In addition to DoL certification, graduates will earn a certificate of proficiency awarded by Southwestern College and a Certificate of Apprenticeship from the Department of the Navy. Graduates will also be converted to career civil service appointments at their participating commands.

Participating activities include Naval Sea Systems Command field activities PSNS & IMF and Southwest Regional Maintenance Center, as well as Naval Air Systems Command's Fleet Readiness Center Southwest. NAVSEA's Portsmouth Naval Shipyard's San Diego detachment is also expected to join the partnership.

Job announcement will open on Saturday, April 17th and run until 9:00 PM PDT on Tuesday, April 20th to fill the inaugural class of approximately 30 students. Additional classes are anticipated each year thereafter.

Interested parties should watch Jobs, Jobs, Jobs at or DoN CHART at for the actual apprenticeship announcements.
